CNXC Girls Win Brown County Sectional!

Sunday, October 11 2020

The Columbus North Girls' Cross Country team was victorious Saturday in the Brown County Sectional.  This marks their 34th overall Sectional Championship and their 24th consecutive title.  Both are second all-time in state history.  They are one victory away from tying Carmel High School for the most consecutive Sectionals titles in state history.

"These two stats do not mean much right now but they do speak to the remarkable consistency of high-level performance that Columbus North has prided itself in over the years.  34 titles and 24 in a row are both great examples of the "every day" runners that we have turned out under Coach Weinheimer and Coach Matchette along with Coach Scruton" Coach Sluder said.

"Our seven girls ran great races today under tougher circumstances.  I was proud of their effort and they way they competed.  We took 4 out of the first 5 spots and put 5 runners in the top 10.  We also had all 7 runners finish in the top 14 of the race.  That shows our strength and depth as a team.  No girl let up today and that is something to be very proud of as individuals."

"Mackenzie Barnett was able to win a Sectional Championship as an individual- something she has worked very hard to achieve and something she can now have as a memory for the rest of her life.  Speaking from experience, it is nice 20+ years later to remember these achievements."

"Brianna Newell ran amazingly well and actually made up ground on the leaders after 2k and ended running a convincing runner-up in the field.  This was easily one of her best races after PR'ing last week the Valley Twilight meet.  This sets her strong for the next few weeks."

"Katherine Rumsey and Abby Jacobi worked close together for most of the race and worked past a few girls in the middle to run a perfect even-split race.  Katherine was very close to catching the 3rd-place runner.  It was easily her most competitive and strong race of her career.  Abby really gutted out another varsity race for the team.  I could not be more proud her her effort and the transformation from a good high school runner to an outstanding one over the past three years.  These two have just simply decided that they are not going to settle for average and it shows."

"Madysin Perry finished out our scoring with another great race.  She has won multiple JV races this year and just needed a chance to show her varsity ability.  Today she did that by finishing in the Top 10." Two seniors, Aric Tong (12th) and Megan Saeger (14th), ran gutsy races to finish out the team placing.  "We are very proud of both Aric and Megan.  They have been leaders in practice, races, and off the practice field.  I am so happy that they were able to run strong races and demonstrate their abilities today."

The CNXC Girls will next compete Saturday at the Columbus North Regional held at CERAland.  The Girls' race will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the Boys' race to follow 11:15 a.m.  The buses will depart at 8:30 from the school Saturday morning.
